Chapter 2--- VOCABULARY

Chapter 3- VOCABULARY

I am going to be honest and admit that vocabulary is my least favorite aspect of language arts. It is very important that each student is assessed individually for vocabulary.

One major problem I have with teaching vocabulary is figuring out which strategy to use. My favorite idea that the book has is creating a word wall.

"This gap in word knowledge is problematic because of its impact on content learning and reading comprehension. "

One thing that the book brought to my attention was how to approach vocabulary in each subject. Another lesson I learned from the book was the expectations for students that they should try to meet.

Students should:

  • be actively involved in word learning,
  • make personal connections,
  • be immersed in vocabulary, and
  • consolidate meaning through multiple information sources.

I really like the idea of using graphic organizers to enhance vocabulary. One problem I face with vocabulary is finding smaller words for my audience. I have found lately that the thesaurus is my best friend when writing.
